Helping a couple out of-state-birders find Dusky/Sooty Grouse and find myself writing under less than favorable circumstances--just outside Winthrop and nearing Mazama, hit a Mule deer and our morning/day has been scrambled as a result. Yesterday late morning we too were at Wenas like Michael Fleming and Jamie Acker, and also saw a WHITE-HEADED WOODPECKER right along the Dry Creek Rd., an absolutely perfect and very accomodating bird. Along the Uptanum Rd en route, we too had BREWER'S SPARROWS at several locations, two SAGE THRASHERS, and a nice mix of songbird migrants that included about 12 W. TANAGERS in a loose concentration, along with both kingbirds, Bullock's Orioles, a few warblers and other species. Later, we missed Tricolored Blackbird near Wilson Creek/Crab Creek area, but I don't recall any reports from that otherwise well-advertised spot this year as yet, and we had very limited time near dusk. We were looking down on the marsh from Hwy 28 just east of town.

We also missed Sooty Grouse at Wenas, but the wind was blowing well and it was near noon and later as we looked/listened. In two places we did have GRAY FLYCATCHERS. GREAT EGRETS seem more widespread than formerly over here, with birds along Dodson Rd (2-3) and up at Wilson Creek/Rt 28 along the Crab Creek drainage (3). Very impressive numbers here in Winthrop of EVENING GROSBEAK; the birds seem virtually residential along main street, I figure I've seen/heard about 80 so far. For the less than 24 hrs to this point, we have 90 species for the trip.
