Hello,We enjoyed observing two snipe sitting on the roof of our gazebo this morning. Our house overlooks a marshy area in the Chehalis River Valley. The two birds caught our attention by their calls--a series of 8 tree-tree-tree notes on the same pitch, rising to another pitch and repeating the series of notes several times, finally slowing and lowering in pitch. One sat on the very peak of the roof and occasionally ruffled its tail. The other remained a few inches below. They did not seem to care that two people were watching them at eye level about 10 feet away! We watched them for a long time before they flew to a nearby gate where they continue to serenade us. Is this song and the tail ruffling breeding behavior?
Carol
