Subject: [Tweeters] Swallows picked a precarious nesting spot

This morning around 0725 while awaiting the traffic light in Belfair I noticed two northern rough-winged swallows darting about above the busy intersection hawking insects. As I waited I noticed they kept flying into a small pipe extending out from the poles holding the traffic signals out over the road. The pipe is for extra traffic lights if ever needed. Both swallows kept going in just far enough that only the end of a tail showed then they would dart back out again. Just as the light changed for me to go one swallow flew in and disappeared into the pipe which had a diameter of no more than one and one half inches. The pipe extended about 2-3 inches out from the main support beams/poles.

I'm sure there are plenty of insects in that area for them to feed on and raise their youngsters with. But I can't imagine what fledging is going to be like having to make a first flight right above a traffic lane. Hopefully the kids fledge during a lull in the day.
