On Sunday morning Bev Jennings and I took two of the three barn owl young from Marymoor to Aerowood Animal Hospital for transfer to Sarvey Wildlife Care Center. Both birds had been found on the ground below the nest box. One was very much injured and nearly motionless. The other might have been uninjured but appeared to be traumatized. Their sibling had been killed and its body was about 15 yards in front of the nest tree on the concert area lawn. Both wings were broken and its neck was twisted, but it hadn't been as much eaten as I might have expected. There was no sign of the owl parents. The nest appeared empty.

Many thanks to Bev for knowing about Aerowood and helping take the owls there, and to Eugene, Mike, and Doug from the parks department, who eagerly lent their Internet connection, phones, boxes, blankets, and work gloves to the effort. (I'll be writing to their supervisor.)

I'll be putting the Sarvey number into my phone. For those who may not know, Sarvey rescues, rehabs, and releases injured and orphaned wildlife. They're in Arlington, and they have a network of locations where people can drop off injured animals for pickup. If you find an animal and call Sarvey, they'll direct you to a dropoff point. Hoping this post will not be too redundant with others, as Hugh and Bev Jennings also were on the scene this morning and mentioned others had been concerned upon seeing the owlets on the ground on Saturday evening.
