Today Susan and I birded in Skamania County.along Highway 14 from Cape Horn to Stevenson. from the roadside overlook at the Franz Lake NWR we could count 24 swans which included at least one TRUMPETER SWAN that called several times. Two GREAT EGRETS were being chased around the lake by GREAT BLUE HERONS. The water is being raised again in the pond at Skamania Landing and the duck numbers and diversity are dwindling there. We checked the area above Bonneville Dam from the overlook at the visitor center's east parking lot. Here there were about two dozen COMMON MERGANSERS, a dozen WESTERN GREBES, and two male GREATER SCAUP accompanied by a female SURF SCOTER and a juvenile BLACK SCOTER. Wilson Cady
