At about 3:30 this afternoon, I counted 17 flickers within a hundred yards. They were dispersed on the ground in a mowed agricultural field. If you'll remember, 10 days ago a slightly larger number were very near this area in a rugosa rose thicket. I could not see any concentration of insects or ants in the area, but it had been raining much of the day and it was possible they were feeding on earthworms. That's a lot of flickers staying together in one area for over a week! Two thoughts from tweeters last time were either they were attracted to a food source, or some sort of a winter aggregation. Anyone have other ideas?
