Gene has always been a voice of calm and reason on Tweeters. Through all of
the controversies and flames, Gene has been a leader, because his voice is
authoritative and means no disrespect to anyone. I have appreciated that.

I think it was 1989 when Bill Leonard and I were giving a talk on spotted
frogs for Seattle Audubon, at the Museum of History and Industry. We were
told that our talk was bringing out the "science crowd" within Seattle
Audubon, and there was Gene, asking the hard questions. Bill and I didn't
know that much. We were quite new to our subject but still intent upon
trying to get others interested in spotted frogs and, particularly, to bring
out knowledgeable individuals who could edify us. Gene was one of those
because he gets around, he's observant and curious. All great attributes, I
