Seems after yesterday's storm there were a lot of reports of VARIED
THRUSHES and ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRDS today. I also had a male and female VARIED
THRUSH in my yard. It is always a strikingly beautiful bird, but I first saw
them overhead this morning. They flew across the street into my trees, with
the sun bringing out the colors even more against the blue sky and the snow
reflecting of them. The breast band and wing stripes and the orange
underside, especially on the male, standing out, The HERMIT THRUSH in my
neighbors yard also put in a reluctant appearance.
Other noteworthy Twin Lakes birds, included a beautiful RED-BREASTED
SAPSUCKER, at least one EURASIAN WIGEON on Lake Lorene and a male GREATER
SCAUP at the same location. Despite the cold temperatures, I managed to see
39 species in my backyard and within a mile from my house, including a dozen
different species of waterfowl. - not too shabby!
Now I wonder, if the arctic blasts brought us some winter visitors - Snowy
Owls maybe?
