Happy Thanksgiving to all in Tweetersville. This post will most
likely be of interest only to those in the Edmonds area. Chase Lake
is a surface water retention area near 220th St. S.W. and 84th Ave.
W. The north-south arterial bisects it. The larger pond is on the
east side of 84th and the smaller one is one the west side. It is
covered each year in the Edmonds wedge of the south Snohomish County
CBC. I decided to walk down there early this afternoon, just to see
what might be out. Interestingly, the west side was open water and
the larger, east side pond was frozen. All ducks were, therefore, on
the west side. There were a MALLARD drake, two AMERICAN WIGEON hens,
four GREEN-WINGED TEAL (two drakes and two hens), and ten NORTHERN
SHOVELERS, nine of which were hens. It was pretty quiet but I did
notice one NORTHERN FLICKER, four CROWs, about 30 STARLINGs, and one
each of GOLDEN-CROWNED and RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET. Yard birds have
been way down today, too. The female ANNA's has been perched in the
vine maple most of the day, either for convenience of sipping at the
feeder or guarding it.
