Tweeters,

With one 10# bird safe in the oven, I went out to see the birds that were
alive and populating my neighborhood. My best birds were in the Woodland
Park Zoo's Rose Garden on Phinney Ridge in Seattle. There's a path at the
far east edge of the garden, behind the gazebo and a false fence, where I
had a few Varied Thrush and a bright Townsend's Warbler. In the small
woodlot just to the north of the Rose Garden, I saw a dark (juv?)
Red-breasted Sapsucker. On my way into Woodland Park it was actively pecking
(sucking?), leaving a great pattern of holes. On my way back 20 minutes
later it was resting, clinging to the bark of a hemlock, all puffed up.
