I think this will sum it up best, Joe. You can wait a life time and never actually see a Sora. If there's one in the area it'll be at your feet in a flash if you use sound bites. Most people don't over use their equipment and any of the advanced birders that do use it will mostly be trying for unusual birds.
Using recorded calls doesn't have to be a hot button issue as long as people don't over use them.
OK, how about this angle: you play the call of a Sora and the Sora gets all excited, thinking he/she might see another Sora, and there on the boardwalk is a human with an iPod and a big grin.
Major disappointment for the Sora, me thinks.
Use, overuse, and/or abuse are besides the point. Is your life not complete if you never see a Sora?
