We headed back to the Waterville Plateau to see if we could find more chickens. Just after the turn up the hill through McNeil Canyon from Beebe Bridge we had 12 Chukars fly across the road and scamper up the hill in front of us.

Today the weather on the Waterville Plateau was the classic ground fog and cloud meeting together. In Mansfield, there were 170 California Quail congregated feeding on the ground and jumping up to snatch seeds from the tall stalks.

On Bridgeport Hill Road one mile south of Hwy 72, we found a large flock of Horned Larks that included one female SNOW BUNTING. We continued south over the crest of the plateau and stopped again at the Wells Wildlife Area to see if we could relocate the SHARP-TAILED GROUSE. As we had our cross country skis with us today, we strapped them on for a tour through the sage brush. We saw lots of sign of the grouse, but no birds until we came back to the copse of trees next to our car where we found them yesterday. There were 13 birds.
