Yesterday from the shores of Lincoln Park--along with the orcas, who I have
to say were the real stars of the show--I saw a lovely Common Loon, and
several M and F Harlequin Ducks. There was also a small group of Western
Grebes sparkling in the short-lived sunshine.

Then this morning I heard my first Varied Thrush of the season. What a
wonderful transition time this is.

On Wednesday, September 29th, George Neavoll and I birded at Mount Rainier.
On the way home, we left Paradise at about 5;30 pm and drove around the back
of the mountain via White River and Rt. 410 to Enumclaw. We were amazed at
the number of Varied Thrushes feeding on the road. They would fly off to the
sides in two's and three's after every turn in the road. Our conservative
estimate was 30 plus, but may have been much higher. We stopped a couple of
times and verified that these were indeed Varied Thrushes, even though there
were also some American Robins on the road. In addition, we saw at least
half a dozen Common Ravens feeding on roadkill.
