Hi Tweeters,

I could be wrong here and I'm not going to spend the time to clarify through
research: but it seems reasonable to me that males displaying could have
equally as much to do with securing a "territory" for food as for mates.
The two things are intertwined, with Anna's sticking around all year, it
seems logical to me that a male bird would want to hold down his spot to
have food and in turn a mate come spring. The best way for a male to
establish this is through a display and it could not always have something
to do with a female being nearby. Being protective of food sources, a
display is probably less costly than chasing every individual nearby. Not
to take the fun out of the "Fall Romance."
