Yesterday, Oct. 7th, my wife Susan and I birded the high mountain lake area of northern Skamania County. The birding was slow and we found low bird numbers and very few species. Our best birds were a WESTERN GREBE and a OSPREY on Takhlakh Lake and at Horseshoe Lake there was an adult female NORTHERN GOSHAWK. We cruised the roads between Takhlakh Lake and Keene's Horse Camp looking for Spruce Grouse with no luck until late in the afternoon when Eric Bjorkman joined us to await nightfall for an unproductive search for Boreal Owls. When we first met up near Divide Camp, Eric spotted a female AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER fly to a close tree giving us a prolonged view at close range.
