My vote: Juvenile, Male Cooper's Hawk. The four photos highlight many of the characteristic features of a young Cooper's not seen in the first: buffy cheeks, long, clearly rounded tail, wide white terminal tail band, markings on breast. Exposure of photos doesn't allow examination of subtle color features, but really great action shots. I find that it is always helpful to have multiple photos or video and size perspective when comparing Cooper's and Sharp-shinned hawks, which is usually challenging.


When I looked at the first shot, I could not determine which of the two species it was. The apparently small head and less than robust build made the possibility of SHSHHA possible.

I submitted about 9 images to and bird identification forum and there seem to be some divide whether the hawk was a juvenile Cooper?s or Sharp Shinned. If anyone would like to take a look at the thread and let me know what you think it is I would greatly appreciate it. The images were taken August 12 th of this year at the Montlake Fill in Seattle.
