I was scouting Flowing Lake Park, North of Monroe this morning for a future
class field trip when a hawk came across the big open grassy area by the
lake, in pursuit of a Steller's Jay. The view could not have been better,
the jay was caught in a splash of feathers and driven to the ground. The
hawk dispatched it with a blow behind the head, then hauled the Jay up into
a fir in the campground area. I followed it and found the hawk pulling out
feathers but my presence disturbed the birds breakfast and it carried the
jay out of sight to the east and out of the park. Wow. Nothing like a bit
of early morning predation to wake you up.
