Subject: [Tweeters] Day-roosting Barred Owl in Volunteer Park, Seattle

A Barred Owl was seen day roosting in a Western Redcedar on 10/27 in 2010 at noon. About 100m just W of S from the conservatory perhaps 10m off the road between conservatory and the SAAM.

Not a great rarity but the sighting is a first Barred Owl for me in the park.

On CBC 2009 North Capitol Hill section we heard a (probable) Barred Owl call twice in this exact location (I even checked out this tree and attempted a lame call without response) but we couldn't find it that time. I presume this might be a "regular" location for day-roosting.

There is a nesting/breeding pair of Barred Owl in Interlaken Park (just a short flight away) which are often seen, vocal and well known to the local dog-walkers, residents and local crows. This could be a vagrant or one of them.

He was being bothered by crows (that's how I went to look for something interesting in the cedars) but after the crows left he took one look at me, slowly closed his eyes, shuffled down the perch, scratched its disk and went back to sleep. Urban owls don't see humans as threats.
