On that same trail this past Saturday I heard a loud, low-pitched sound and came around a turn to see a male Sooty Grouse booming from a log, yellow air sacs plainly visible. I've only seen the females on the side of the road before, so needless to say this was quite a treat! Anyway, I'm guessing that's what you saw.
