I live in a very wooded area and am fortunate to have four regular
woodpecker species: pileated, hairy, downy, and flicker. I have
feeders under the eaves so I can watch various goings on while I work
on the computer, including a little square wire suet feeder that one
can buy anywhere. This year for the first time, the male pileated
brought his youngster to the feeder. He got the hang of it, but after
watching these very large birds wrap theirselves around a small suet
feeder, I decided a change was in order.

I went to the Wild Bird store and bought one of the
made-for-woodpeckers suet feeders - an extension that lets them brace
their tail on it. There was no hesitation whatsoever to use this new
feeder and now, it seems, every bird in the yard likes suet. It was
certainly worth a bit extra money and it holds two squares of suet.
Now I don't have to change it every couple days. The birds love it and so do I!
