Today Barry Woodruff and I went to Ocean Shores in Grays Harbor County to see if we could add a few birds to his life list. As we neared the end of Point Brown Avenue two EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES landed on a power line, a new county bird for me.The female KING EIDER was quickly found at her usual Damon Point location, One of the first birds we spotted on the Oyhut Game Range when we entered from Tonquin Place was a juvenile RUFF easily picked out by its large size and bright brown coloration as it strode through the flocks of SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS. We added two WANDERING TATTLERS near the base of the jetty. We headed back to Damon Point for a quick check of' the birds there and added a female HARLEQUIN DUCK to Barry's checklist. While scoping this bird a pure white (albino?) COMMON LOON was working along the rocks in the bay, a truly stunning bird. When I got home I got an email from Barry letting me know that the Harlequin Duck was his 500th ABA bird after taking up birding three years ago. And all around great day!
