Hi Birders,
I spent a very productive day (9/5/10) in the mudflats of Ferry County,
seeing 9 species of shorebirds if in small numbers. KILLDEER were seen at
every stop. The Sanpoil River mouth near Keller had 2 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS,
but this was the hotspot for mammals with 7 River Otters hauling out as I
got there and a Black Bear crossing the mudflats and swimming across the
river as I left. After traveling east on Silver Creek Road the next mud area
was accessed from the end of Barnaby Creek Road a bit north of Inchelium.
The rewards here were 4 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS and 1 BAIRD'S SANDPIPER.
Farther north at Haag's Cove Campground there was 1 RED-NECKED PHALAROPE.
The biggest bonanza was at my last stop at the Kettle River Campground. Here
I managed to find 1 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 3 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, 2 SPOTTED
SONDPIPERS, 1 LEAST SANDPIPER, and 3 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS. Many thanks to Ken
Knittle for the tips on where he's found shorebirds here in the past. Good
birding.
