Caspian terns have been flying along the Edmonds waterfront ?the past two days.?
I?caught?some when the light was good and got?some good photos.?? Photos of the
underside of one tern shows several bands on?both legs.? I assume this bird was
part of the Oregon State University project to band the terns at the Bellingham
colony.??? If anyone here is involved in the project or knows someone who is
and?wants to study the photos,?shoot? me an e-mail?and I will return it with
photos.

I noticed an interesting pattern of an adult leading with its "angry cat" growls
followed by a juvenile with its high pitched squeeks.?? I usually hear the terns
before?I see them, as their thin?cross section?profile can make?them hard to
spot when they are heading straight towards me.


At twilight I got a series of shots of a Caspian tern diving for a fish off
Sunset Ave.? Unfortunately the photos are not the greatest due to the camera not
holding focus and the poor light.??? After the tern made the dive and came up
empty (I think),?one photo clearly shows?it flying upside for a second.? I have
heard of terns doing this, but I don't ?why.? Can anyone enlighten me?
