Sunday evening I made a conscious effort to spot the Common Nighthawk. I started at 6:00PM and my first sighting was at 6:33 PM and my second was at 7:03 PM. My previous 2 sightings had been lucky, I just happened to look skyward at the right time. Most birders have a special bird and the Common Highthawk is mine. In 1949 and 1950 we lived at 13th and Olive in Seattle. As a 5 yearold the sound of the Nighthawk was the sound that summer was here. I would see and here them every night. Of course I wasn't a birder at the time and I didn't know the name of the noisy night flyer. When I did become a birder and I heard my first Common Nighthawk it immediately brought back those memories. As I was writing this post this morning I took a break to go outside and check for the Nighthawk and at 6:23 it showed itself again. It is great to see one back in this area. Good birding and look skyward and you might be as lucky as I have been.
