Early this morning (0645) I jumped some geese and saw a flying bird that I presumeed to be a goose flying with western Canada geese. It was still early and light was poor and the birds were flying away from me. I could see flashing with wings and the bird was much larger than the geese it was flying with. I continued on and located a sharptail sandpiper on Rest Lake and since I had no phone decided to go to the nearest phone and call Randy Hill about the STSA.

Randy and I returned to the STSA site and before we got there here was the black swan sitting in the water south of the auto tour route and Rest Lake (0730). Randy was able to get a few pictures before the bird swam off away from us. We continued on and looked for the stsa, no luck, and while doing so the swan flew over us headed north toward Ridgefield then turned and flew south we followed the bird out of sight. My guess is it may stop at Post Office Lake at the end of Lower River Rd or Vancouver Lake. The bird was somewhat jumpy I say this because of the way it reacted to me early in the morning and the way it swam away from Randy and I later.

The bird is all black, white flight feathers and a blood red bill. Can't miss it.

There were quite a few shorebirds on Rest Lake early as the tide was at it's peak.
