Subject: [Tweeters] Varied Thrush arrival-Seahurst forest

This morning, Sept 24, spotted a small flock of Varied Thrushes, 2 males & 3
females, in the Red Alder canopy just outside my 4th story condo windows.
This is the earliest fall arrival date I have in my records, and it is the
largest number of Varied Thrushes I've seen at one time for this location,
i.e., the NE edge of the Seahurst Park forest in northwest Burien, WA. In
past winters, I have had an occasional Varied Thrush visit my feeder deck,
usually picking up suet flecks and possible seeds on the deck floor. Varied
Thrushes are usually reliable winter visitors seen annually near our condo
area. Immediate location has the forest of Red Alders, Big Leaf Maples and
Conifers directly adjacent to my deck. I often heard Barred Owls at night
'barking' and calling in the nearby forest. The owls' calls can be
distinguished from the calls and yelps of the recently arrived (this year)
small pack of coyotes to this section of the forest.
Be alert,
Maureen E Ellis
