Hello Tweeters,
Figure out the weather we been having,I decide to taken advantage of the
good weather on Friday to going Owling for the Boreal Owl .Going up to
Sunrise it was slow birdying, when Rogers spotted a Varied Thrush. When we
got on top,we was surprise how many people still taken advantage to visiting
Mt, Rainier.People go hiking and also taken photos.Jerry made us aware that
he saw a Northern Goshawk flying in settling on the top of Fir tree halve
way up the hill, this looking with out binoculars this bird looked quite
dark gray ,So as we did not bringing a scope we walked up the hill a short
way ,when I spotted some dark streaks on the breast and he looked real
light gray and seem that it was a large Rapture. It turned out this bird flew
to another tree and we saw the brown back wit a little white in the
wings. It was a Northern Goshawk a subadult female. We started out good , The
weather was perfect with no wind, and a full Moon perfect I thought for
Owling.
The Sunset was spectacular especial with the white mountain. the Sun
lighted the snow,Other birds of interest where Clark's Nutcracker, Lot,s of
large groups of PIPIT' as early flying higher around and Mountain Blue
Bird.We start walking on some of the trails close to the Parking Lot,when
Roger heard a Boreal calling,it was not real dark since we had the full
moon keep it some light and we could see if the Owl would flying out from
the tree the sound was coming from, but unfortion the Owl never called
again. We visiting 2 other places one where we had 2 Boreal Owls calling and
than flying over the road last year.I asking already many birders if the
Moon have an effect on the Owl.Patrick and I owlet a lot,and I look
back.that we had another time we had no Owls, but heard some calling in mid
night.

Cheers and good birdying,Ruth Sullivan
