I was hitting golf balls today September 29, 2010 at about 6 pm at the U of W golf driving range this afternoon and a hawk (northern harrier?) landed in the range. I watched in shock as one of the golf instructors chipped a golf ball at the hawk in order to stop it from interfering with the group golf lesion he was giving. When I ? loudly? told him and everyone else on the range it was a federally protected bird and to stop hitting balls. He became upset ran over and became confrontational. He said he worked at the range for 20 years and had driven many geese away for their own safety. My question to any or all of you is, does anyone know if this is the policy of the U of U driving range to have its employees use this method to drive off birds from this public range?.
