Hi,

Since a couple Tweeters folks have wondered if we might actually have seen a Loggerhead Shrike rather than a Northern, I'll let you all know that after comparing the two in Sibley's and National Geographic, Henry and I are very sure it was an adult Northern Shrike. The hook on the beak was very noticeable. The black mask was narrow, unlike the adult Loggerhead. And the color was a smooth gray, not the mottled look of the juvenile Loggerhead.

However, it's interesting to learn that at this time of year the chances of seeing Loggerhead and Northern are apparently about equal, though generally the Loggerhead is not present on this side of the mountains.

If the photographer is on Tweeters, I hope he will post some photos so other folks can enjoy them. Sorry we didn't get your name or email address.

Helen
