Canon teleconverters (TCs) fit only Canon's L series ("L" = "expensive")
lenses. The Canon 1.4 and 2.0 TCs have a protruding internal hard rubber
ring which is designed to let the TCs fit only certain lenses. (Tamron or
someone makes a cheaper TC which will fit other Canon lenses. I bought one
and gave it away.) The Canon L IS 100-400 is basically useless with a TC,
either 1.4 or 2.0. The Canon L IS 70-200. a great lens, works fabulously
with the Canon 1.4 TC and pretty successfully with the Canon 2.0 TC. The
Canon L IS DO 400 and the Canon 1.4TC are pretty much permanently mated on
my Canon 7D. The new Canon 70-300 L IS I just bought will not accept a TC.

I generally refuse to use a tripod, so I look for combinations which allow
for handheld shooting. The 2.0 does not come out of the bag very often,
whereas the 1.4 is always close at hand. I shoot mainly birds and
dragonflies. Some thoughtful clients permit me to buy things before I learn
how to use them. Tweeters posters offer me inspiration to do better.
