The word I have received from the Refuge Manager at Steigerwald lake NWR is that the refuges will be totally closed with the gates locked and volunteers are not even allowed on the refuges to carry out habitat restoration projects etc. Wilson Cady

Thanks, Teresa.

I should have been more specific in my question. I'm wondering if (a) all refuge roads will be barricaded and closed, or (b) the roads will remain open, and just the buildings will be closed, and no staff will be present -- similar to what happens on weekends at many refuges.

I was planning to visit some refuges for the first time, and have no idea if it is even possible to barricade the roads at all refuges. My recollection is that some of the more NWRs in our country do not have the ability to close all roads.

I am not an official USF&W person but I was just reading up on how things might be affected for another one of my projects, and it did say that refuges and national parks would be closed.

In light of the possible government shut-down, I'm wondering if USF&W staff can comment on whether or not the refuges they manage will be open or closed during the shut-down.

I'm not looking to start a political debate -- just wanting to know if I should cancel/change my plans for next week. It would be a real bummer to drive several hundred miles to find a "road closed" sign. Given the time of year, I suspect some others might be in the same boat.

Thank you.
