Tweeters,
I was checking out the WESTERN BLUEBIRDS that were carrying nesting material
into one of the nestboxes here, when I spotted two CHIPPING SPARROWS on the
ground nearby. This is the first time that I've had them overlap with the
FOX and GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS that have been here all winter. That makes a
9-sparrow day, if you include SPOTTED TOWHEE and DARK-EYED JUNCO in the mix.
Of the 21 nestboxes I have set up, 19 are being defended or already have
nests in them. Two have CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEES ensconced, one is
defended by the aforementioned bluebirds (the first since 2009), and the
rest have TREE SWALLOWS.
Last Sunday, 4/17, The RED-TAILED HAWKS started tearing up prey at their
nest at the corner of the property. I figure that's when one of the eggs
hatched. They've had nest failures the past two years, so I'm hoping this
year yields at least one fledgling.
About 3,000 Cackling and Canada geese flew over early on. Most were the
former. (Couldn't tell if there were White-fronted geese amongst them -
didn't have bins at the time.)
It's a pretty good day species-wise, and I had 49 on site thus far,
including the following:
