At the risk of beating another dead horse I am sharing with you this
weblink that a fellow birder shared with me. It is written by David
Sibley and the title is: The Proper Use of Playback in Birding.

In my opinion it is a well balanced, and of course well written article.
Even the comments section is worth reading. Even though Mr. Sibley does
not directly reference the ABA's Code of Birding Ethics, he does begin
with this summary:

"First, it is important to point out that the use of playback is
prohibited in many parks and refuges. It is also illegal to disturb any
endangered or threatened species (and playback can be interpreted as
disturbance). Any potential negative impacts of playback are more likely
to occur in areas with a lot of birding pressure, so avoiding playback
entirely in those places is a good idea. Where and how to use it in other
situations is up the individual birder."

To find the most up-to-date list of T&E species, as well as species of
concern and other levels of protection you can check the WA Department of
Fish and Wildlife's website:

There you can even sort the animals by "type", for instance, by bird. If
you hover your mouse over the question mark next to the column headers
State and Federal you can see what the intials stand for.
