Last evening while riding home from Redmond to Woodinville
on the Sammamish River bike trail I noticed at least one
shorebird silhouette in some flooded fields. So this
morning at 7:15 AM I exited the bus at NE 124th Street and
Willows Rd and procrastinated work for about 2 hours. The
best spots were 2 big puddles in the fields NE of the NE
124th Street bridge. At first I thought the near puddle
only had Green-winged Teals and Mallards so I rode a quarter
mile north down the trail to the far puddle where I found 4
GREATER YELLOWLEGS. On the way back I climbed back up to
the bridge and looked at some distant gulls in the NW field.
I am gIad that I decided to recheck the far side of NE near
puddle as I found 2 definite DUNLIN, 2 probable WESTERN
SANDPIPER, and 6 probable LEAST SANDPIPER. A scope would be
very handy here but I was on my bicycle. I also forgot to
look for car parking near that bridge. From there I took a
leisurely ride with plenty of binocular stops south on the
river trail. My other shorebird was a family of 2 adult and
3 just hatched KILLDEER on the lawn of ?Pond Park? south
of NE Leary Way between the river (slough) and Redmond Town
Center. I had a total of 32 bird species on this cloudy but
birdy morning.
