For three days in a row, I saw a Coopers Hawk suddenly sweep in
toward the bird feeder on our deck, hoping to surprise one of the
huge Band-tailed Pigeons and colorful Evening Grosbeaks that have
been pigging out on sunflower seed. None of the raids were
successful, but the explosive scattering of big birds was
entertaining?I'm just glad none hit the windows!

Today, I returned to the house after being away for a couple of days,
and lo and behold, there was a scattering of big gray feathers over
much of the deck?he hawk had been successful. Our bird feeder feeds
a whole food chain.

With the incubating Wood Duck (as seen on TV!), foraging warblers,
and a Beaver and River Otter swimming by, it has been an entertaining
week.
