FWIW, the fence just to the west of the pond -- the fence that birders were standing near yesterday -- is posted (can't remember for sure if the signs say "Private Property" or "No Trespassing" or both). I take that to mean that the fence is at or very near the property line. Between the parking lot and this fence, we encountered no other signs, fences, or other features that would suggest that we had crossed the boundary of public to private land or crossed into public land with restricted access. The map at the West 90 parking lot seems to support this as well. Also, there was someone working in the northeast corner of the field, and this person did not appear to be concerned that birders were standing to the west of the field.

I'm not saying with 100% confidence that access from this side is OK, but all signs (both literal and figurative) appear to support that it is.
