Asta,

Your lucky to have found a copy of Pratt's book, they are hard to come by these days! I lived in Hawaii for some years so I can give you some spots to go. You should really go on a tour with Hawaii Forest & Trail. They have tours that go up in the mountain to Hakalua Forest. This is a restricted access area and they have the permits to go in, plus they have great guides. Here you can easily pick up almost all of the endemic birds. Along the way you also bird Saddle Rd where there are many game birds.
Volcano National Park is also a great place to bird. In the park, Thurston Lava Tube is a nice trail, but go early it can get crowded in the afternoon. Chain of Craters Road you drive down seeing the hawk, owl, nene and game birds. A less traveled road is the Hilina Pali which produces the same birds but less traffic. At the end of the road is the sea arch and both Noddy species nest here.
There are two main sides of the island, but any local park on either side you can easily pick up the introduced birds, like the doves, finches, cardinals and myna. If you are going to Punalu'u Black Sand Beach (which I recommend) you can pick up these birds and see sea turtles.
Hopes this helps to start off, if you want anymore info on places or more specifics you can email me.
Good Luck!

Megan
