Asta,

Here's a bit more to add to Megan's information. There's a new (2010) guide that would be a good partner to Pratt's book. It's A Photographic Guide to the Birds of Hawai`i by Jim Denny. I also carry Hawaii's Birds published by the Hawaii Audubon Society. I'm frequently on the Big Island and would add Wailoa Beach Park in Hilo for Nene and Hawaiian Coot, Kaloko-honokohau National Historical Park near the Honokohau Boat Harbor (check ponds for Hawaiian Stilts, Coots, and others; beach at low tide for shorebirds and turtles), and Big Island Country Club for finches, Nene, and game birds. (Be sure to check in at the pro shop before birding there.) It's not easy to find Bristle-thighed Curlew on the Big Island, but I've seen one several times at Mauna Lani Beach Hotel.

My "Birds of Hawaii" photo gallery contains mainly birds from the Big Island and I usually list place and date of the photo. http://www.pbase.com/laumakani/birds_of_hawaii

Have a great time and don't hesitate to ask if you have other questions.
