Hello Tweeters,

I spent 45 minutes on this lovely morning watching a young Cooper's Hawk repeatedly go after crows that were foraging on the lawn of the south play field at Lincoln Park, West Seattle. Twice it even tried to catch a squirrel, who didn't seem too upset by the experience.

The crows seemed to be in parent-offspring pairs. After perhaps 1/2 hour of this, the crows started to get aggressive back at the Coop, chasing it off and harassing it.

I'm guessing that the young hawk must have been pretty hungry to spend so much energy on the same prey with repeatedly unsuccessful results. I hope s/he found some breakfast eventually.

Photos, including a few blow-by-blows, are on my Flickr site. The Coop set starts at

with a fairly poor one of the hawk and the squirrel, but it's in chronological order, and there are a few better ones later on. (If you'd rather just scan them all rather than going through chronologically, you can view the photostream at flickr.com/photos/trileigh.)

A good birding weekend to all,
Trileigh
