Hi,

I once made the suggestion, on Tweeters or Whatcombirds (I forget which), that Point Roberts be traded for some other Canadian real estate, such as on the border with Maine. I got a sharp rebuke from a Canadian. It seems that they like the jurisdiction just the way it is. There is too much crime on the Canadian side, and it is safer on this side in Point Roberts. It has to do with having their cars broken into by drug addicts. On the other hand, maybe I don't remember it right.

While we're changing boundaries, I think the 49th parallel boundary should extend all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Then southern Vancouver island would belong to the USA.

John, and others,

This might be a good time to apply some logical standard to several of the
arbitrary survey lines around Whatcom County. Kind of like the Professional
Sports teams, maybe there could be a three-way trade.

a. Fix the county line at the South end of Lummi Island - Skagit County
would cede Viti Rocks and the South end of Lummi Island to Whatcom County.

b. Fix the country line between Boundary Bay and Georgia Strait - Whatcom
County would cede Point Roberts to British Columbia. (Then the Canadians
could get cheap gas without having to go through Immigration/Customs!)

c. Make some sense out of the Upper Skagit region - Whatcom County would
cede Diablo, Newhalem and all the populated area around the City Light Dams
to Skagit County. (Wouldn't those folks rather have a Skagit County
commissioner watching out for them?)

d. Balance out this real estate transfer by granting all birders perpetual
access to the area 2 miles on either side of the entire length of the Skagit
River - Fir Island to Manning Park.

Whadaya think?

Dick

I think we should ask the candidates for Whatcom County Council and
Executive what they are prepared to do to defend Whatcom County's
territory from Skagitonian encroachment.

I would think the state statutes (which form the basis for the USGS)
maps, would be more reliable and more "primary" than county tax
assessment records (which form the basis for county "ownership"
records). Let's see what John Stark comes up with. I think we are having
far to much fun with this to leave it to mere chain of authority. How
about naming the rocks as their own entity? Surely neither county
government really cares.
