Fourteen birders joined Stan Wood and I from 8 am to noon on our monthly walk at Lake Sammamish State Park for Eastside and Seattle Audubon Societies on Friday, Aug 26 2011. It was a perfect birding day with sunny and clear skies, very little wind and temps ranging from 63 to 73 degrees. Some of the highlights were seeing 3 juvenile HOODED MERGANSERS boldly preening out in the open at the lake's edge; 2 GREEN HERONS (1 foraging on a dead tree trunk at the lake's edge, the other flying towards Issaquah Creek); good scope views of a juvenile OSPREY perched and preening; 1 juvenile COOPER'S HAWK still learning how to hunt; a brief sighting of a MERLIN deciding not to land in the same tree as a perched OPSPREY; 1 juvenile RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER feeding on a tree trunk; several WESTERN WOOD-PEWEES perched, flycatching and still vocalizing; a brief look at a BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER in a mixed flock with a WILSON WARBLER, juvenile COMMON YELLOWTHROATS and both chickadees. 46 species for the day, 116 for the year.
