I joined Tim Brennan, Les Carlson, Nina Bohn and Jon Leland in a dawn to dark birding trip in Skamania County to challenge the December big Day Record of 60 species.. We saw a total of 68 species of which 63 were seen by all of the participants. The best bird of the day was a male TUFTED DUCK in the flock of scaups in the bay at the east end of the Stevenson waterfront. There were at least 1,000 ducks just offshore of the boat ramp. We had a calling TRUMPETER SWAN and a GREAT EGRET at Franz Lake. Doetsch Pond, at the east end of Skamania Landing, held one more GREAT EGRET. After my having tried for a CANYON WREN at Beacon Rock a dozen of times this year, we got a response call and a visual of it. A WESTERN GULL was sitting in the now dry, Bonneville Dam fish passage spillway. Wilson Cady
