Forgive me if it's already been mentioned, but regarding the influence of lemmings on Snowy Owl migration, indications are that the lemming population was very high this year, at least in some locations, leading to a good breeding year for the owls (see second paragraph at http://www.nabirding.com/2011/11/30/got-snowies/).

It was a good year for Snowy Owls in Barrow, AK. I was there in early October and saw more owls than I ever did before. I saw one before I even got off the plane, and I'd estimate I saw about 15 owls every day I was there.
