Hello All,

Well it was a divided CBC. I mean anyone under 1100' elevation was blanketed in and under dense fog and 28 degrees F. Those of us who were above the dense basin wide fog bank were in pure sun shine and warm 50+ degrees F. Slight wind along the edges of the fog bank made the area very cold. Birds were widely separated with concentrations materializing out of the fog. 29 folks participated in this the 37th Walla Walla CBC. Birds of note this year were...........

24 Wood Ducks-high number for count.
98 Common Mergs-smashed our previous high count of 46.
01 Spotted Sandpiper-first for this CBC
120 Eurasian-collard Dove-largest number ever for this CBC
16 Great Horned Owl-tied our all time record.
12 Belted Kingfisher-tied our all time record.
40 Downy Woodpecker-smashed our all time record of 32
0 Stellers Jay-first time ever.
0 Mountain Chickadee-this is now the norm.
0 Varied Thrush-first time ever on this CBC.
490 White crowned Sparrows- broke our all time record of 402.

Rare and unexpected species

American Pipit-1-4th time on this CBC.
Anna's Hummingbird-1-3rd record for this CBC.

We located a total of 67 species with one new to the count and that is the Spotted Sandpiper. Still locating new species after 37 years of this CBC.
Thank-you to all that supported this CBC and braved the fog and the sun.
Later Mike Denny
