Depends what you consider a bargain. I have birded in Costa Rica for
7 weeks on a total budget of well under 4k USD. That includes all
transportation from Seattle, plenty of restaurant meals, several days
using hired guides, lodging, etc. I stay in inexpensive but clean
cabins and take buses, cabs, and Interbus ($45 private van ride
anywhere in CR) to get around. Most of the time I stay put in a small
region (Monteverde/Santa Elena), but will be gone maybe a quarter of
the time on 1- or 2-day excursions. I come back with around 3,000
photos :) and having made lots of friends. By the way, speaking
Spanish is optional, even for traveling cheap.
