Yesterday afternoon~2pm I spotted a Eurasian wigeon in a flock of American wigeon at Magnussen park south of the boat launch. I have seen birds that looked like hybrids of the two species before but this was the first obvious EW for me.
A melanistic mallard hen with a normal drake in the wetlands at Magnussen park. It was likely a domestic mallard release or hybrid. The size was normal wild hen size, most domestic ducks are much larger. she was very pretty all black with a blaze of white on here breast. Her bill seemed extra fine and a bit longer than it should have, also solid black and somehow brought a shoveler to mind. I'd love to hear other input on observations of this bird or the occurrence of Melanism or hybridization of other similar species in the wild mallard population Frequently I see pale versions of the wild mallards at Magnussen as well so I wonder about the frequency of natural mutation in the population as a whole.
Also seen, at "The Nature Shop" was a quartet of yellow crowned kinglets bathing and having bonnet explosion contests.
In the wetlands there was a coopers hawk juv. that looked very solidly dark except for the white undertail coverts and "pants" I could see no markings on the breast or belly and the bird looked uniformly dark front and back. New glasses and I saw it perching and flying. It seemed to realize I was following it so i quit.
