Subject: [Tweeters] late Ocean Shores report (12/25)

All,

Returning from a high tide Black Rail chase near Point Reyes (not bad --
ask if you want details), cut short because of little pink gull news
(went yesterday, thanks), I visited Ocean Shores on the afternoon of
Dec. 25. My first pass of the golf course had nothing unusual. The
rain paused. The just-falling spring high tide and onshore winds had
sandpipers roosting near the jetty base despite lots of people and dogs,
and I counted at least five ROCK SANDPIPERs among the BLACK TURNSTONEs
and SURFBIRDs. I didn't find an eider around the sewage ponds nor Damon
Point. Nor did I see any warblers nor gnatcatchers. The tide had
fallen enough to allow walking out Damon Point and I saw six SNOWY OWLS.
Reports suggested two more, but I had miles to go, and I didn't want to
see any more flushing by jerks (this time one with a camera -- few dogs
came this far). Rain resumed once I got into my car. Returning to the
golf course, I saw the EMPEROR GOOSE with two GREATER WHITE-FRONTED,
CACKLING, and dusky geese, one with a red neck collar I couldn't
entirely read.

Happy solstice,

Alan Grenon
