As a birthday gift, took an enthusiastic "non-birder" out to see the Snowy Owls at Sandy Point today. Found two of them, both huddled up against a structure on a rooftop seemingly to get out of the wind. However, the wind was blowing pretty fierce today and you could see it hitting the chest of one of the birds pretty hard. We had a close view of this and noticed that it seemed to be using its lower eyelid to block the wind (wish I had one!) as it would raise it in response to the wind when it turned its head that way and only for one eye sometimes. Pretty cool to see so close up.
