Hi Neil and Carleen,

There is a very active and knowledgeable birding community in the beautiful Upper Valley region of the Connecticut River centered around Hanover (home to Dartmouth) and Lebanon, New Hampshire and Norwich, Thetford and Queechee, Vermont. May will produce an abundance of some of the the East's best birds, including many wood warblers. Check out the Upper Valley birders list serve (UV-BIRDERS at LISTSERV.DARTMOUTH.EDU) and the website of Jim Block (http://www.jimblockphoto.com) a superb bird photographer.
who lives next door to Hanover in Etna, NH.

Both the Hanover Inn and the Norwich Inn are good places to stay. Eat at either the Canoe Club in Hanover or Simon Pearce Restaurant in Queechee. The latter is located next to a waterfall and a covered bridge (that was damaged by Hurricane Irene but should be repaired by next Spring if it hasn't already been.)

Have a great trip.
