It has bee a mostly sunny, but breezy morning (12-30-11) in Edmonds.
Waterfront ducks included Northern Pintail (Dennis Duffy reported a
couple of fly-bys before I reached the public pier), Surf Scoter,
Black Scoter (13-15 seen from both Sunset Avenue and Water Street
public access), Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye, and Red-breasted
Merganser. I saw no geese this morning. There was a 12-pack of Pacific
Loons and one Common Loon on the water at Water Street. Two more loons
flew by farther out, either Pacific or Common, but I couldn't be
certain which. Double-crested and Pelagic were the only cormorant
species and Horned and Red-necked were the only grebe species seen.
Dunlin was the sole shorebird. There were 70+ on the south end of the
marina's south breakwater. Gulls were limited to Glaucous-winged,
hybrids, and Mew. It was a three-alcid morning with Pigeon Guillemots
and Rhinoceros Auklets on the water. One Common Murre flew by.

Although the tide gate appears to be closed, there was some water in
the Edmonds Marsh. No ducks were there. Twelve Great Blue Heron were
at rest. Killdeer, 27 of them, was the only shorebird. Twelve Mew and
three Glaucous-winged Gulls were bathing in the water. The resident
male Anna's Hummingbird was in its usual spot at the end of the
boardwalk. A few Red-winged Blackbirds were in the cattails and a male
Downy Woodpecker was working a snag at the easternmost viewing
platform. A small mixed feeding flock included Black-capped Chickadee,
Bewick's Wren, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Spotted Towhee, Song Sparrow,
Lincoln's Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, and American Goldfinch.

Good birding,

Carol Riddell
